An oasis of goodness...

{sigh} Nothing caps off a looong and crazy April 14 chock full of tax prepping like lots of really well boiled, well spiced mudbugs! And then washing it down with your favorite beer. Essence of kick-back-and-enjoy-the-fruits-of-your-labor-ness....

Nothing...except a li'l inquisitive Bourgeois who was very eager to learn to peel, and even open enough (at 3 years old!!!) to suck da heads. He got the technique down pat!

"Daddy, I drinked it all gone! I like ta drink the crawfish juice out of the crawfish! But I don't like the poo-poo in the meat."

Essence of proud Louisiana fatherhood :-)

Lol...that's so gross! I think I've officially decided that I'll never try a crawfish, ever ever. *shudders*

i wish someone had been standing by to hand me a tray of boiled crawfish and a cold Abita Amber as i hit the "submit" button on my e-file last night.

Oh, and Rachel - I'm not sure it's even possible for me to think twice about eating them, since it's such a part of my upbringing.

Stephen was watching The Emperor's New Groove a while back, which at one point shows characters in a restaurant eating these gigantic roasted rolly-pollies. It looks gross and then I think, "Hmmm...crawfish and lobsters are crustaceans, and so are rolly-pollies - still, ugh." Food psychology is big with me (don't get me started on chocolate-Velveeta fudge) - but I can't remember ever first trying crawfish because they were just there in south Louisiana.

my mom has promised boiled crawfish when i come into town next week. and there's always the 15-20 different varieties served at Jazz Fest.

(oh btw, i'm in Houma and New Orleans for most of next week)

I remember being 4 or 5, and my friend Ross and I sitting at the kids' table with a pile of crawfish that in my memory was higher than our heads. My mom and his mom were at the "big table." I remember sitting there, eating crawfish, smelling the fresh mown grass, hearing the ball game at the neighborhood field, and life just being perfect. It's one of my vivid, happy, childhood memories. . .

(That was in Waveland, and the house with those memories is gone now. . .)
