Childhood Trauma

It's funny what brings back memories. And it's funny what terrifies children in their immature perceptions of things. This morning, we were all in the kitchen after pancakes - I've had an extremely busy week at work and haven't seen the fam much. So this morning I was paying some affectionate attention to my wife - and Lexie was tugging at her while Stephen was calling her in the living room...Adrienne was groaning in the tugging every-which-way. I said, "We ALL NEED YOU, everyone's TUGGING ON YOU and needing EVERYTHING you HAVE, even on the INSIDE!" She flared her nostrils and just looked amusingly annoyed. And my mind summoned up, "Calgon, TAKE ME AWAAAYYY!!!"

And then I remembered how HORRIBLE that commercial was to watch as a child. My mom always had Calgon, and the logo had that lady in the swirling whirlpool that looked like it was sucking her into the vortex of oblivion. The commercials always showed the exhausted wife and mother just cry out that desperate slogan and be whisked away from her offspring and domestic burdens. I remember being 3 or 4 and crying when I'd see it, and then crying more when my mom would buy it at the store because I thought she didn't want us anymore and wanted to go where the commercial lady went when she'd use it. I don't think I ever put it together that she always came back from taking a bath. Just that Calgon needed to be erased from consumer consciousness (or at least Mama's).

Gosh, what revelations parenting brings...
