What's The Very Educated Mother gonna Serve Us now?
*Sigh*
The ostrakon of the astronomers has been cast...and it read "Pluto and Charon"

Did anyone else quietly mourn Pluto's deposal from planethood?
You know, when we learn about outer space and the solar system in elementary school, do we all go through a time when we want to "be an astronaut"? Exploration of the unknown, of the uncertain. Those breathtaking Voyager-1 and Hubble Telescope images of the heavenly bodies I saw as a boy just sort of called to me. I was such a little science geek back then.
And there's already a morbid discussion of how much more valuable our styrofoam-ball mobiles and models of the 9-planet solar system will be, now that Pluto's tiny ball will be banished from future science project assignments. If I'd known I was creating an historic archive in third grade, I might've been more careful.
But a weightier question on my mind has been: So what the heck is My Very Educated Mother Just Serving Us? It can't be "Nine" anymore...it can't be an adjective! Yesterday, off the cuff, I posed the question to Adrienne. Then I answered it myself..."Nothing."
I want Pluto back. But people tell me I live my life in narrative. So much for my inner science geek.

Art in "Spent Hen"
Stephen was begging this afternoon for "dinosaur chicken." Adrienne asked if I would kindly put some chicken nuggets in the oven for the Peanut. I opened the freezer to find this object of my awe: dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets!!!
No, really - LOOK AT THEM!

I'm sure by the time we were around 8 or so, those of us who adored Chicken McNuggets as children (all right, OK, and still do when we have a nostalgic hankering for molded reconstituted chicken chunks - y'all know you're suckers for that sweet'n'sour sauce!) noticed that their shapes started to repeat after the third one we pulled out.
What a way to add some pizzazz! I mean check out the detail in the Stegosaurus's spinal plates!

It's exquisite!
I think I remember something within the last decade about Burger King selling their line of reconstituted chicken in the molds of the characters from "Rugrats" for a time. Man, I should've gotten some. I bet the whole reason they did it was to see if they could really come up with a likeness of Chuckie's hairstyle in breaded chicken.

I'm sure if one were to actually witness the manufacture of these gustatorial wonders, one would no longer find them quite so fascinating. The bit in Super Size Me about the actual process behind processed chicken pieces was a tad too enlightening. I remember something about egg-laying hens who were so old the fruits of their labors were no longer profitable - "spent hens" I believe they were called (nice, huh?) - so they enjoyed an end-of-life career change, ultimately injected into molds to look like Chuckie Finster's hair, stegosaurus spinal plates, and your regular ole' Chicken McNuggets. Yum-O!
I also found within the treasure trove of our freezer some fish sticks that aren't fish sticks - they're fish FISH! And fish anchors and fish stars!!
Why didn't they have more exciting chopped-reconstituted-molded-processed food cutouts when we were kids, huh?

What to do?
My beautiful wife of 4 years and 1 day is leaving me overnight tonight to have a "Girls' Night." She and Mizriz Ducktoe, a.k.a. "Ashwee" will be taking the blooming young ladies of JKPC out to eat, shopping, sleepover-ing, advice-in-growing-pains-giving, and whatever other mysteries of femininity gals do when together.
So I have my itty-bitties tonight. And, in the words of Stephen-the-Peanut, "I'm gonna do it all by myself." Mister Ducktoe a.k.a. "Misser Ed" will be taking his Dolls to see their Paw-Paw Cotee - so no grillin'/commiserating being wifeless.
What to do? The Offspring keep us constantly moving, but I want a fun Daddy-IttyBitty night...Stephen's rapidly shedding his itty-bittiness - they grow so fast! I'm sure there will be some theatrics - I make a good snake/dragon/dinosaur...fill-in-the-evil-reptile-to-be-slain blank. I'm also a pretty good jungle-gym...and now that Lexie's walking exclusively, she can join in the fun!
I wish we had the Wizard of Oz...maybe we'll rent it. I remember that one a lot from being three.
And after they go night-night, I have some work I can do, some new good books I can read, or some sociopolitical flicks to choose from that Rick lent me which stand to be good - or at least thought provoking...so that while Adrienne's mentoring young hearts through toenail painting and shopping, I can have more to stew over about my plot to save the world through more awareness of its brokenness...oh me of little faith, right?
And do blueberry pancakes and sausage sound good for breakfast? Maybe French Toast? Crêpes, maybe? I don't know if, being as itty as they are bitty, that they'll go for the crêpes.
