Good to know
Earlier I clicked on an "Is Breastfeeding Legal?" link on a parenting website and of course it said that it wasn't. I knew that it wasn't, but didn't really know very much about most states stand on the subject. A few days ago was the first time that I ever really breastfed in public. (I'm not considering friend/family house public) At church I usually go to the nursery and when I've been shopping have gone into a dressing room. But Sunday evening on the way back from Greg's wedding in Birmingham we stopped at a Shoney's for dinner and it was also time to feed the baby. In the interest of me getting to eat and not having to spend extra time in the parking lot also feeding the baby I did actually nurse him while sitting in the resturant at our table and eating myself. I don't think anybody even realized what I was doing. Not even sure our waitress noticed when she came to refill drinks.
A few moms had responded to the post with comments about carrying cards with their state's legal stance printed on them. I realized I don't even know what Louisiana's stance on breastfeeding is. So I looked it up.
§2247.1. Breastfeeding; discriminatory practices prohibited
A. Legislative findings and declarations.
(1) The Legislature of Louisiana hereby finds that the surgeon general of the United States recommends that babies from birth to one year of age be breastfed, unless medically contraindicated, in order for the babies to attain an optimal healthy start in life, but that despite that recommendation, statistics reveal a declining percentage of mothers who are now choosing to breastfeed their babies, and nearly half of all new mothers are choosing formula over breastfeeding before they even leave the hospital.
(2) The legislature further finds that breast milk provides better nutrition and more immunity to disease, is easier for babies to digest, and may raise a baby's intelligence quotient, but that the social constraints of modern society work against the choice of breastfeeding and lead new mothers with demanding time schedules to opt for formula feeding for reasons such as embarrassment and the fear of social ostracism or criminal prosecution.
(3) The legislature does hereby declare that the promotion of family values and infant health demands that our society put an end to the vicious cycle of embarrassment and ignorance that constricts women and men alike on the subject of breastfeeding, and that in a genuine effort to promote family values, our society should encourage public acceptance of this most basic act of nurture between mother and baby and should take appropriate steps to ensure that no mother is made to feel incriminated or socially ostracized for breastfeeding her baby.
B. Right to breastfeed. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, a mother may breastfeed her baby in any place of public accommodation, resort, or amusement.
C. "Discriminatory practice in connection with public accommodations" to include a discriminatory practice against a mother breastfeeding her baby. Any direct or indirect act or practice of exclusion, distinction, restriction, segregation, limitation, refusal, denial, or any other act or practice of differentiation or preference in the treatment of a mother breastfeeding her baby shall be a "discriminatory practice in connection with public accommodations" for the purposes of this Chapter.
D. Breastfeeding; discriminatory practices prohibited. It is a discriminatory practice in connection with public accommodations for a person to deny an individual the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of a place of public accommodation, resort, or amusement, as defined in this Chapter, on the grounds that the individual is a mother breastfeeding her baby. This discriminatory practice in connection with public accommodations is prohibited.
E. Breastfeeding not a violation of law. A mother breastfeeding her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, shall not be deemed to be in violation of R.S. 14:106 or of any other provision of law.
Acts 2001, No. 576, §1.
I thought this was very interesting and liked what it had to say. I don't know how it stacks up compared to other states, but it works for me. I don't know if I will start carrying it around printed on a card, but glad to know what it says just the same.

It really makes a difference
I try to make economical choices when shopping for household stuff. Therefore I usually try to buy pretty cheap paper products. Not the cheapest. What is the point of that stuff, anyway? It is so thin that you use twice as much and then you are out more often. But the cheapest of the still might be nice and sortof looks like name brand... For instance we use Angel Soft toilet paper. not bad stuff, works fine for us. Sparkle paper towels - that was a big switch. My mom was a pretty die-hard Brawny fan. And she is right. Sometimes you get what you pay for. And buying the more expensive stuff is just necessary for the quality. I was buying just the Great Value kleenex and pretty much have a box in every room of the house. But now that we are on our upteenth round of runny noses and after just one day Lexie's nose being all raw I decided to buy Puffs sensitive care or something or other like that. Well, I'm just here to tell you that there is a huge difference. It is definitely 20 cents well worth it.

It's an updation
Just to let you know in case you were wondering...
Lexie's checkup went just fine yesterday. We paid a lot of money for the Dr. to confirm what the echo-tech had told us back in february. Lexie has a small hole between the top two chambers of her heart, a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO).
"Fetuses have a normal opening between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. If this opening fails to close naturally soon after the baby is born, the condition is called patent foramen ovale (PFO).
PFO is the persistence of a fetal opening between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. This hole allows blood to bypass the lungs, because they are not used until a baby is born. The foramen ovale normally closes soon after the infant is born.
The foramen ovale may remain open in as many as 1 out of 5 people. The cause is unknown and there are no known risk factors for developing a PFO.
This condition is not treated unless other heart abnormalities exist.
The infant will have normal health in the absence of other heart defects.
Unless there are other associated defects, there are usually no complications associated with PFO. There have been some studies suggesting that older patients with PFOs have a higher rate of a certain type of stroke (thromboembolic). The reason for this is that older people frequently develop blood clots in the veins in their legs. These clots can sometimes travel from their original site to the right side of their heart.
If PFO is present, the clot can then pass from the right side to the left side from whence it can travel to the brain and become lodged there, preventing blood flow to that part of the brain (stroke)."compliments of Medline Plus.com
So she is fine. Just check back up with him once a year and at some point it will most likely disappear.
The house. We found out that we are the only bites this house has gotten in 6 weeks. And that the couple doesn't really want to come down on their price. We don't want to come up to their price. Brad did some research at the court house and found out that they bought the house about 9 mths ago and paid a whole lot less then they are currently asking. We are going to go look through the house again this afternoon. Before we were mostly just running from room to room oohing and aahing. This go around we will look more closely at closets and stuffs. And then we will pray about and maybe make an offer. We really like this house but we can walk away from it too. We don't have to move. We just want to. So we will just wait and see what happens and keep y'all posted.
